10 rules to follow BEFORE you contact a breeder about a specific puppy …
1- CLEAR IT WITH YOUR SPOUSE/SIGNIFICANT OTHER FIRST!!!
2- Clear it with your LANDLORD first!!!
3- Make sure that your whole family is on board!!
4- Make sure that you ALREADY have the money to pay for the puppy before you start
contacting breeders about a specific puppy, even if you have to save for years before you start looking!!!
5- Make sure that you are able to afford to feed, groom and vet a puppy throughout it's whole life!!
6- Make sure that you research and KNOW what the breed is like and if it will suit your family!!
7- Make sure that you have the time necessary to give a puppy!!
8- Make sure that you are WILLING and able to put the effort into training and socializing a
puppy!!
9- DO NOT count on your children to take care of the puppy, consider it to be YOUR
responsibility and then train them to care for it, but understand that you are
and always will be ultimately responsible!
10- Make sure that you can make a LIFETIME commitment to a puppy…if you
would be willing to rehome a dog in the future because you move, don’t have
time for it, have a baby, didn't know it would get so big, it gets too old, the dog is too active but you aren’t willing to exercise and train it, etc. etc. etc....then DON”T get a puppy!!!!!
Puppy Supply List
I am often asked what people should have ready for their new puppy, so here is a list
Chews
Our dogs favorite chews are bully sticks and hooves.

https://www.chewy.com/s?query=Hooves&nav-submit-button=
Poop bags
You can get a dispenser that attaches to the leash so that you always have them with you when you are out walking.

Dental Care
Dental care is important, just like for humans you should brush your puppy’s teeth daily, provide chews and toys that will help to keep tartar down, and regular cleanings by the vet.

Potty Pads
Even if you don’t intend to have your puppy use potty pads on a regular basis, it is a good idea to train him/her to use them when necessary, so that you have the option if you are traveling or in an area where you don’t want them to be outside.

Travel Bowls
Collapsible bowls are a good thing to keep in the car

Leash, Collar, Harness, ID collar tags
Use a harness for walks AFTER your pup has learned to walk nicely on a leash, to avoid developing the habit of pulling.
Always keep an ID tag on your pup.

Outdoor Clean Up
A spade set makes cleaning up in the backyard so much easier. Also have a bucket lined with a plastic bag to dump it into, then you can just pull out the bag for disposal.
If you don’t have a yard and are using daily walks for pottying your puppy, then the disposable bags attached to the leash are the way to go.

Crate
A two door crate makes it more flexible as to where you can put it.
The more time your pup will spend in the crate the bigger it needs to be. If they will be in it an extended period of time (overnight or more than a few hours) then there needs to be room for a bed, bowls & toys, a potty pad if it will be longer than they can realistically be expected to hold it, and room to move around and stretch out. Alternatively, a pen can be set up instead of a crate to give the pup more room. Make it big enough that the crate can be in it too, with the door blocked open, so that they have a bed.
Crate training is NOT cruel!! A puppy who is positively trained to use the crate will see it as his/her space/safe place.
Feeding in the crate is a good way to help develop the idea that it is a good place to be.
Whether you use a wire crate or a hard sided airline type crate is totally up to your preference. I like to use wire crates simply because it allows me to see the puppy and the whole crate more easily when I check on them.

Crate Bowls
Bowls that attach to the side of the crate help to minimize any spillage or mess.

Travel Carrier
A travel carrier is best for rides in the car to keep your puppy safe in case of an accident and to keep them from distracting the driver.

Beds/Crate Mats

Furniture Covers

Interactive Toys
Toys that stimulate your puppy’s mind are very helpful especially when you are gone. You do need to train them to understand that they have to figure out how the toys works. Typical toys as well are important. Try to avoid the ones with stuffing if your puppy likes to shred things, vacuuming that stuff out of the carpet is a real pain!

Grooming Supplies
In addition to professional grooming every 4-6 weeks, a poodle needs to be maintained at home. Mats are very uncomfortable/painful for a dog and it is your responsibility to keep that from happening. The biggest mistake that poodle owners make is that they use a soft brush and just brush over the top of the hair. Mats start underneath and so to keep your dog mat free you need to make sure that you use the appropriate brush AND comb, and that you LINE brush all of the hair. Use the comb to make sure that you have gotten all of the tangles out.
